The DRA Completes Installations of Septic Tanks and Soak-aways for Sweetings Cay Residents.

The Disaster Reconstruction Authority (DRA) is pleased to share a significant achievement in its unwavering dedication to the residents of Sweetings Cay. We are excited to announce the successful completion of the septic tank and soak-away installations, a crucial step towards ensuring the residents of Sweetings Cay attain full occupancy of their homes.

Sweetings Cay, a tranquil community located on a cay adjacent to the island of Grand Bahama, has encountered numerous hardships, notably in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian. In 2019, Hurricane Dorian unleashed unprecedented devastation upon The Bahamas, specifically Grand Bahama and Abaco. As a category five hurricane, it is the most powerful recorded hurricane, leaving the area’s residents in disarray. In the aftermath, the task of reconstruction presented itself as both painstaking and indispensable, requiring the concerted efforts of the community to rebuild and recover.

This project revolved around developing and rebuilding proper waste management infrastructure for the residents of Sweetings Cay. The absence of such infrastructure has significantly hampered the residents’ capacity to attain full occupancy, adversely affecting their overall quality of life. We empathize with the Grand Bahama & Abaco residents, acknowledging their challenges over the past three years.

Understanding the importance of this matter, the DRA has worked diligently to mobilize resources and coordinate efforts to address the sanitation needs of Sweetings Cay. The DRA has facilitated and completed the installation of septic tanks and soak-aways, which are vital components of any living space, more importantly, a home.

The DRA wishes to express its gratitude to the residents of Sweetings Cay for their patience and resilience throughout this project. While this initiative is a crucial achievement, the DRA notes that significant restorative and reconstruction work remains. The DRA remains committed to advancing these vital projects to restore normalcy for the affected residents of Grand Bahama in the aftermath of Hurricane Dorian.
